A Hudson man was charged Monday with setting fire to the car of a newspaper reporter who had recently written a series of exposes alleging misconduct in the local police department.

Michael Sandagato, 36, was released by Hudson City Judge Barry Sack after spending the night in the Columbia County Jail. Sack ordered that he remain in Columbia County while a grand jury hears evidence against him.Sandagato was arrested on arson and other charges for allegedly torching a car belonging to Jill Hazelton, a reporter with the Hillsdale Independent.

Hazelton reportedly had received telephone threats as a result of the series.
