Former East German soldiers wearing the uniforms of united Germany were caught monitoring Western military radio traffic in a secret bunker weeks after unification Oct. 3, the newspaper Welt am Sonntag said.

In an article to be published today, it said a Western officer in the new all-German army found 20 soldiers at work in a listening post at an army base in Brandenburg.The newspaper said it was not known if they had passed on information to East European intelligence services.

Germany has been rocked by several intelligence scandals in the past few months, with discoveries that East Germany had placed agents at the heart of its intelligence network.

Welt am Sonntag said the commanders of the new all-German army were constantly discovering installations which the East Germany's National People's Army (NVA) had kept secret while it was absorbed into the West German army.
