Second-degree murder charges have been filed against a West Jordan man who called police and said his girlfriend had shot herself.

Donald L. Jaeger, 31, 7495 S. Scranton Drive (3655 West), has been charged with one count of criminal homicide in the death of Mary L. Barndt, who died at Jordan Valley Holy Cross Hospital two hours after Jaeger called officers to his house at about 12:45 a.m. Aug. 22. Barndt had suffered a single .22-caliber gunshot wound to the chest, according to the probable-cause statement filed with the charges in 3rd Circuit Court.Officers originally treated the death as a suicide but began investigating it as a homicide because evidence at the scene looked suspicious, said police Lt. Gary Jeffs.

Jaeger was arrested and booked into jail two days after the fatal shooting but was released from jail until charges were filed.
