Special film screenings are scheduled in conjunction with the grand opening of the Cineplex Odeon South Towne Center Cinemas in Sandy, including free made-in-Utah movies sponsored by the Deseret News.
The new 10-screen complex, the largest movie theater in the state, opened Friday. The Utah movies will be screened Saturday; admission is free for each person who brings a coupon from the Deseret News to the box office. A coupon will be in the Saturday, Nov. 3, paper. (Earlier coupons were in the paper Sunday, Oct. 21; Friday, Oct. 26; Sunday, Oct. 28; and Thursday, Nov. 1.)Here's the screening schedule:
The Searchers - One of John Ford's best classic Westerns, with a complex performance by John Wayne. (2 p.m.)
Three O'Clock High - Cute little teen comedy filmed in Ogden High School. PG. (3 p.m. - what else?)
Jeremiah Johnson - Robert Redford as mountain man. PG (4:30 p.m.)
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - The "Young Indy" prologue was filmed (and set) in southern Utah. PG-13. (5 p.m.)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - Newman & Redford in the saddle. PG. (7 p.m.)
Romancing the Stone - Kathleen Turner & Michael Douglas do the "Raiders" thing. (Brief Western prologue was filmed in Southern Utah.) PG. (7:30 p.m.)
Melvin and Howard - Melvin Dummar meets Howard Hughes and becomes an heir, or so he says; funny, insightful adult comedy. R (a soft R, for brief nudity in a strip joint.) (9:30 p.m.)
Fletch - One of Chevy Chase's best, partly filmed (and set) in Provo, with some funny Utah gags. PG. (9:45 p.m.)
Beginning Monday there will also be free showings of a number of "Great" Hollywood films, sponsored by radio station Magic 107. Passes to these films, which will be shown daily through Thursday, Nov. 8, are available at any store in the South Towne Mall:
The Great Outdoors - Dan Aykroyd and John Candy in a so-so camping-vacation farce. PG.
The Great Race - Too long, but sometimes very funny broad slapstick comedy about a New York-to-Paris car race in the early 1900s, with hero Tony Curtis vying against villain Jack Lemmon.
The Great Santini - Robert Duvall delivers a powerhouse performance in this story of a career military man who can't get close to his family. PG.
The Greatest Story Ever Told - Bloated story of Christ benefits from sincere central performance by Max von Sydow and impressive production values, but the star guest appearances and overblown attempts at epic filmmaking get in the way.
The Great Train Robbery - Delightful, underrated comedy-thriller, based on a true story, with Sean Connery, Donald Sutherland and Lesley-Anne Down robbing a train. PG.
