The annual Striper Derby officially gets under way today on the waters of Lake Powell. Along with that goes the prediction of better fishing ahead.
According to fisheries experts, the stripers main food supply - the shad - has rebounded this year. The result is a larger number of 2- to 5-pound stripers. There is no fee to enter the derby. Fishermen must register at one of the four lake-side marinas, however. Cash prizes of $200 will be given for the largest striper turned in at each marina, along with a $100 prize for the largest overall striper.
The contest will be broken into two parts - Nov. 1 to Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 to Feb. 28.
