An Avery, Idaho, man has been charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Edward John McDonald, which reportedly occurred because of a dispute over two cans of beer, authorities say.

Bennie Wynn Suenkel, 45, was charged Friday in the Thursday night shooting of McDonald, 52, also of Avery. Suenkel is being held without bond in the Shoshone County Jail.McDonald was standing outside Parker's Bar in Avery about 8:30 p.m. when he was shot with a 300 Savage rifle, said Deputy Charles "Spike" Angle. McDonald died about two hours later in a St. Maries hospital.

A Shoshone sheriff's office spokesman said Suenkel and McDonald were among several hunters staying at a camp about six miles southeast of Avery. Bad feelings apparently developed over Suenkel's allegedly taking two cans of beer that did not belong to him.

During his initial appearance in Magistrate Court Friday, Suenkel said he is unemployed and was working with a trail crew about two months ago.
