Seven former followers of dead Indian guru Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh who once operated a controversial commune in central Oregon have been charged with plotting to kill the U.S. attorney in Portland.

The indictment was handed up by a federal grand jury May 25 but was made public only Thursday after six of the defendants were arrested around the world.

The seventh defendant, alleged ringleader Ma Anand Sheela, was the former top aide to the Bhagwan who once served time in federal prison after being convicted of attempted murder, immigration fraud, eavesdropping, arson and poisoning residents near the commune. Authorities now believe she is living in Switzerland.
