A fire blazed through a Salt Lake house Friday, causing $20,000 damage.

Salt Lake Battalion Chief Gordon Nicholl said the fire started on the second floor of a two-story home at 570 S. 900 East and quickly burned into the attic. The blaze destroyed a room that had been converted into an office, and damaged two bedrooms on the second floor.

"It was tough to control because cubbyholes of space fill the attic; a lot of trapped space is created whenever an attic is converted into living space," Nicholl said.

More than a dozen firefighters battled the blaze for 15 minutes before controlling it.

Three people were in the home when the fire started but evacuated when they saw smoke.
