Previously undefeated Springville and North Sanpete suffered their first losses of the season, with playoff defeats meaning that the 1990 prep football season has come to a screeching halt for both teams.
Second-ranked pringville suffered a 20-7 home defeat to Mountain Crest in Friday's 3A quarterfinals; second-ranked North Sanpete was defeated by third-ranked Beaver 28-3 in a 2A semifinal being played at Richfield.Other ranked teams - ranked in the final regular-season Deseret News Coaches Poll - that were eliminated with playoff losses included 3A No. 5 Dixie, 1A No. 2 Milford, and 1A No. 3 Duchesne.
Bear River 21, Dixie 14: The one-two rushing punch of Brian Theurer and Jared Burnham propeled the third-ranked Bears to their 10th straight victory, ending the title hopes for the fifth-ranked Flyers.
Theurer ran for TDs of 5, 25 and 38 yards, amassing 100 yards on 10 carries. While Theurer was gaining the points, Burnham was racking up the yardage, earning 181 yards on 19 rushes.
Dixie, which ends the season with a 8-2 record, scored on a 13-yard pas from Brian Hickman to Tyler Wilkinson, with Wilkinson adding a 70-yard TD run to end the game's scoring.
Spanish Fork 14, Box Elder 7: The Dons continued their magical mystery tour with a second-straight 3A playoff win on the road. Spanish Fork, now 5-5 overall, came into the playoffs with a 3-5 record and the fourth-place seed from Region 8.
Matt Marziale rushed for 147 yards and both SF TDs - 9 and 23 yards. Box Elder, which finishes with a 6-4 record, took a 7-0 lead on Jaime Greer's 1-yard run. Greer finished the year with more than 1,200 yards rushing.
Mountain Crest 20, Springville 7: The Mustangs - considered by many as 3A preseason co-favorites with Bountiful - won their seventh game in eight outings after an unceremonious 0-2 start of the season. Springville concludes its Region 8 championship season with a 9-1 record.
Park City 20, Delta 6: Justin Christensen rushed for a 5-yard TD, kicked two PATs and booted FGs of 31 and 38 yards as the third-ranked Miners jumped out to a 20-0 lead and snapped the Rabbits' four-game win streak.
Mike Packard also scored a rushing TD for Park City, now 9-1 with its sixth straight win. Delta, which finishes with a 6-5 record, had an 11-yard TD run by Van Beckstrom.
Beaver 28, North Sanpete 3: The third-ranked Beavers claimed their fourth straight victory while handing the second-ranked Hawks their first loss of the season. Beaver is now 8-2 overall, while North Sasnpete ends with a 9-1 record.
Monticello 35, Milford 14: In an upset of sorts played at Richfield, the fourth-ranked Buckaroos snapped the eight-game win streak of the second-ranked Tigers. Milford, which finishes at 9-2, had allowed only 40 total points in its last eight games, was stung for 35 points by Monticello, which improved its record to 7-4.
North Summit 34, Duchesne 0: Jimmy Garfield caught two of Brandon Jones' three TD passed, rushed for another touchdown and scored a fourth time on a 6-yard interception return. Matt Bates rushed 21 times for 143 yards, while Cade Sargent had six receptions for 128 yards and a TD for the top-ranked Braves, now 7-4 overall.
Chad Simister played a big role in shutting out the 8-2 Eagles. Simister had nine tackles, seven assists and five sacks.
