Firefighters cut holes in the roof of an apartment on fire to ventilate the attic Thursday morning. A Salt Lake man and woman escaped the apartment without injuries after the kitchen erupted into flames. The blaze began about 8:30 a.m. in the rear of a duplex apartment at 1548 S. 500 East. An unidentified woman who was renting the apartment owned by Mary Doi ran next door to phone the fire department. Smoke was billowing out of the apartment when firefighters arrived. They were able to knock down the blaze within about 15 minutes. "The fire then broke out the back window, went outside and up into the attic," said Salt Lake Fire Battalion Chief Gary Maxfield. The fire gutted the kitchen and caused about $15,000 damage, Maxfield said. The cause of the fire is unknown, but arson investigators were called to the scene.
