Brigham Young University has named Lawrence R. "Larry" Duffin as director of special events and Mary Jean Draper as assistant director. Duffin replaces Scott Williams, who has joined the Larry H. Miller organization in Salt Lake City after 17 years at BYU.

"We are grateful to Larry and Mary Jean for accepting these challenging positions," said BYU Student Life Vice President R.J. Snow. "They have contributed significantly to Special Events operations in the past and will make even greater contributions in the future."Duffin, Spanish Fork, joined the Special Events staff in 1975, serving eight years as ticket manager, three as event coordinator and four as promotion director.

During a leave in 1988, he was director of Management Information Systems at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Hawaii. Duffin also has worked for Paciolan Systems, Inc., of Long Beach, Calif., and United Concerts, Inc., of Salt Lake City.

The California native attended El Camino College in Torrance and graduated from BYU with a degree in business education. He also has attended the Oglebay School of Public Assembly Facility Management in West Virginia.

He is a member of the College Athletic Business Management Association, Box Office Management International and the Paciolan System Users Association. Duffin twice earned honorable mention in the "Box Office Manager of the Year" competition sponsored by Box Office Management International.

Draper, Provo, has worked at BYU since 1964, including 16 years in the Special Events area, where she has been event coordinator and operations manager.
