Former Salt Lake Councilwoman Sydney Fonnesbeck and two family members remained hospitalized Thursday with injuries suffered in an automobile accident Tuesday near Monticello.
Fonnesbeck's husband, Christian Fonnesbeck, 50, was driving southbound on U-191 when he collided with the trailer of a truck driven by Robert D. Ellenberger, 38, of Georgia. Ellenberger was backing up into the road when the accident occurred, the Utah Highway Patrol reported. The Salt Lake couple and their 13-year-old daughter, Anna, were taken by helicopter to St. Mary's Hospital in Grand Junction, Colo. Sydney Fonnesbeck remained in serious but stable condition, while her husband's condition was upgraded to good condition and her daughter's condition upgraded to fair and improving condition.
UHP Trooper Donald Kilgrow stopped Ellenberger three miles north of Monticello for speeding. He determined the truck had not stopped at the Monticello port of entry and told the driver he must go back. Kilgrow accompanied the truck to a nearby junction to help him turn the truck around, said UHP spokesman Gary Whitney.
Kilgrow's patrol vehicle had its emergency lights flashing when the truck was backing up, but he may have been on the opposite side of the truck and the Fonnesbecks may not have seen him, said Whitney.
Following the accident, Kilgrow determined that Ellenberger was a fugitive from Florida. He was booked into the San Juan County Jail awaiting extradition.
