Former West German Chancellor Willy Brandt said Wednesday he plans to visit Iraq next week at the invitation of President Saddam Hussein.

Brandt discussed the visit with Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar at U.N. headquarters in New York."They discussed the situation in the gulf region and devoted particular attention to humanitarian aspects of the situation in Iraq and Kuwait," the German mission to the United Nations said in a statement.

Brandt told reporters after his talks with Perez de Cuellar that he "probably" will go to Iraq next week, either alone or accompanied by some aides.
