An American and his Philippine wife who were kidnapped a week ago will be put on display Sunday by their Moslem captors to prove they are "alive and well," an army officer said he was told.

Col. Carlos Pena, a Philippine Army brigade commander, said Saturday the kidnappers also will present their demands for the release of the couple.Pena said emissaries of the kidnappers told him the couple would be brought Sunday to Bacolod Grande, a town 25 miles from the Lanao del Sur provincial capital of Marawi, to show they were "alive and well."

He identified the kidnap victims as David Stiffler, 47, and his wife, Elpidia Benuya. They were abducted at gunpoint July 30 by four passengers of a mini-bus in Lanao del Sur, 500 miles south of Manila in the rebellion-torn southern Philippines.
