Former President Jimmy Carter and his family began a 10-day safari Friday that included a climb on Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa.

Carter, and his wife, Rosalynn, two of their children and four grandchildren arrived late Thursday at Kilimanjaro Airport, at the base of the 19,340-foot mountain, in northern Tanzania.

They were met by Tanzanian Tourism Minister Arcado Ntagazwa before driving to the town of Marangu, which is 6,000 feet up the peak.
