Funeral services are scheduled Friday for Dr. Preston R. Cutler, a thoracic and cardiovascular surgeon, who died Oct. 28, 1990. He was 79.

Dr. Cutler practiced medicine in Salt Lake City since 1948. He and his colleague, Dr. William R. Rumel, performed the first closed-heart and major vascular operations in the Intermountain West. The pair were instrumental in establishing a Division of Thoracic-Cardiovascular Surgery at LDS Hospital, as well as introducing an intensive care unit.He was an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Utah Medical School and served as governor of the Utah Chapter of the American College of Chest Physicians and president of the Salt Lake Surgical Society.

Among other professional affiliations, Dr. Cutler was a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and the Board of Thoracic Surgery. In addition, he served on Gov. Cal Rampton's Air Conservation Committee.

Memorial services will be at noon Friday at the Monument Park Ninth Ward LDS Chapel, 1565 Foothill Dr.

Friends may call at the Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, and at the church on Friday from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m.
