The referee involved in Clearfield's 13-7 football playoff victory over West Jordan has been released from working the remaining playoff games by the Utah High School Activities Association.

The referee, Paul Christensen, "was out of position on the play in question and has been suspended for the remainder of the season," said Glen Beere, UHSAA executive director. "His status will be reviewed next season."The controversy arose when a last-second West Jordan field goal attempt was blocked and Clearfield player J.J. Thurgood kicked the loose ball toward the Clearfield goal line, enabling another Clearfield player, Jeff Kirkman, to grab the ball and run for the game-winning touchdown.

Christensen said he did not see Thurgood kick the ball.

Beere dismissed West Jordan coach Rick Bojak's plea Monday that the game be replaced.
