Joshua Jackson, 10, West Bountiful, who last year attended Rosecrest Elementary School, Salt Lake Extension School for the Deaf, was recently awarded a $700 grant from the Travelers Protective Association of America, St. Louis, Mo.
Established in 1975, the association's scholarship trust for the deaf and near deaf has awarded grants totaling $154,200 to 272 hearing-impaired people.A son of Rick and Cori Jackson, Joshua was born deaf. Tests to determine the child's disability were first given when he was a month old, but doctors weren't able to know the extent until Joshua was 18 months old. Joshua was then equipped with hearing aids.
While living with such a handicap is a challenge, the disability has been a positive experience. Joshua attends Mill Creek Elementary School, Granite School District, this year. He is a Webelos Scout, plays soccer and is an avid fan of John Stockton and the Utah Jazz, his mother said.
