South Korea opened its embassy in Moscow Tuesday and appointed Gong Ro-myung as its first ambassador to the Soviet Union, the Foreign Ministry said.

The South Korean Embassy began full operation based on a mutual agreement earlier this year to establish full diplomatic relations between the two countries.Gong, 58, has served in various diplomatic posts both at home and abroad. His previous assignment was as the consular officer at the South Korean trade office in Moscow.

The Soviet Union, an ally of North Korea, had no official ties with South Korea before the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics.
