Robert F. BennettBennett served on the Strategic Planning Commission that developed the Shift in Focus, which was adopted by the current board as a guideline for education over the next few decades. He believes he would bring a fresh and forward-looking perspective to the board.

Do you support alternative certification of teachers? "I am in favor of it."

Do you favor equalization of capital outlay and debt service tax income across the state? "I oppose increasing state top-down control of education. If such equalization would produce this result - and it very well might - I would oppose it."

What is your position on school prayer? "If school personnel and patrons wish to open non-required events with prayer, they should be allowed to do so. Prayer at compulsory school activities, such as daily classes, is inappropriate."

Frances Hatch Merrill

A member of the Utah House of Representatives from 1983 to 1986, Merrill served on the Education and Judiciary committees. She has been invited to sit on numerous local and state committees focused on family and educational issues.

Do you support alternative certification of teachers? "Anyone who is qualified in specific areas to teach should be considered if they apply. There are many resources not being tapped."

Do you favor equalization of capital outlay and debt service tax income across the state? "What is a rich district or a poor district? Whose standards are we judging by? When we shift taxes across political boundaries in an effort to help other districts, we encounter a greater wrong of non-accountability of public funds. Something for nothing has never been wholesome."

What is your position on school prayer? "God our Creator cannot be ignored. Atheism has no consistent moral values. We are turning our children over to standards without morality and then wonder why we have problems in our society."
