The Federal Office of Substance Abuse Prevention has given $3.5 million to Salt Lake County to help fight the war on drugs.

The money will be shared by the county, Salt Lake City and the University of Utah and will be used to prevent drug abuse, rather than to treat abusers, officials said. The county, city and university have developed a program that will use educators and prevention agencies throughout the valley to reach all areas of the community. The program will develop a closer working relationship between agencies and will focus on the concerns of families and ethnic groups, officials said. It also will educate people about services that are available and will develop an awareness of the extent of the local drug-abuse problem.
