Coast Guard crews took advantage of favorable weather Saturday to contain 164,000 gallons of kerosene that spilled into the Hudson River when a barge ran aground on a reef.

The barge, carrying about 30,000 barrels of kerosene or 1.26 million gallons, ran aground and sprang a leak Friday night about one mile south of Marlboro and 60 miles north of New York City, said Bill Falk, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman in New York. The cause of the accident was not immediately clear, but high winds and choppy seas may have contributed, Falk said.
