Separate traffic accidents claimed the life of an Ogden man and seriously injured a young Salt Lake girl this week.

Killed in a van-pickup collision Wednesday evening in Plain City, Weber County, was:Michael Cousens, 46, Ogden.

Latai Vaenuka, 7, was in serious condition Friday in intensive care at Primary Children's Medical Center after she was struck by a car at a busy Salt Lake intersection.

Cousens died Wednesday evening at McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden following a collision at 7:35 that evening at 2700 N. 2900 West in Plain City.

Cousens' daughter, Holly, 10, who suffered bruises and abrasions, was in stable condition Friday in McKay-Dee Hospital. Heidi Cousens, 12, and Michael Cousens' father-in-law, Louis Rubin, 83, also of Ogden and who was also a passenger in the van driven by Michael Cousens, were treated and released at McKay-Dee Hospital.

Jeffery Powell, 29, of Ogden, who was alone in the pickup truck, was treated for minor injuries and released from St. Benedict's Hospital.

A Utah Highway Patrol press release on the Plain City accident, investigated by Trooper Ron Nelson, says Powell's pickup truck, eastbound on 2700 South, ran off the right side of the road, overcorrected and went out of control. The pickup flipped on its side and slid into oncoming traffic, striking the westbound Cousens vehicle.

Vaenuku was injured about 5:30 p.m. Thursday when she was hit by a pickup truck in an intersection at 700 S. 700 East in Salt Lake City. The girl, who was crossing 700 East from east to west, was hit by a pickup truck driven by David K. Birch, 30.

Salt Lake Police Sgt. Scott Folsom said the child made it most of the way and had stopped most rush-hour traffic, but was hit as she reached the curb lane.

She is being treated for a broken arm, broken collar bone and abdominal injuries.
