Bridge collapses, stranding islanders A dredge broke loose from its moorings Friday during gale-force winds and slammed into a North Carolina bridge, collapsing a 300-foot section and stranding thousands without electricity. The Herbert Bonner Bridge, the only link across the Oregon Inlet between the mainland and Hatteras, home to 5,000, may be closed for months. Gov. Jim Martin declared a state of emergency. Officials plan to ferry supplies to stranded residents Saturday. No injuries were reported.
