The Salt Lake County Farm Bureau will host talent contests and a cookout championship during this year's annual Salt Lake County Fair, which opens Aug. 14.
The Farm Bureau "Talent Find" and the "Cookout King Contest" will both be held Aug. 20.Steve Stefanoff, president of the Salt Lake County Farm Bureau, said all amateur performers are invited to participate in the talent find, which will be held at 8 p.m. Participants must be Farm Bureau members and will be organized into the junior division, children up to 10; the intermediate division, ages 11-16; and senior division, aged 17-30.
Stefanoff said winners in each category will be awarded prizes along with the right to compete for the state title in their division Sept. 10 at the Utah State Fair. All entries must be received by Aug. 10. For more information, prospective contestants should call Shelly Hamilton, at 254-6910.
The Cookout King contest offers male contestants an opportunity to demonstrate their skills with an outdoor barbecue grill or a dutch oven. Contestants must be at least 16 years old. Categories include beef, lamb, pork and poultry (including turkey).
Contestants will be judged on the quality of the meal, knowledge of the cooking of their chosen meat category, cooking skills, and showmanship involved in preparing and presenting the meal to the judges. A separate showmanship winner will also be named.
The county cooking contest will begin at 3 p.m. with judging at 6 p.m. Stefanoff said the Cookout King, showmanship winner and the first place contestant in each meat category will be eligible to compete in the state contest at the Utah State Fair Sept. 10.
