A judge has set April 29 as the trial date for Challenger Foundation Director Stephen Cartisano on charges of negligent homicide and child abuse.

Sixth Circuit Judge David Mower spoke with the Kane County prosecutor and defense attorneys by telephone to establish a timetable for the trial.Mower set Feb. 28 for a hearing on outstanding motions in the case.

Cartisano, 35, is charged with a misdemeanor count of negligent homicide in the June 27 death of 16-year-old Kristen Chase, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., who died while hiking as a student in the 63-day wilderness program.

He is also charged with eight counts of child abuse stemming from allegations that students were subjected to exposure to the elements and dragged or forced to hike while ill.
