Drinkers will no longer be kicked out of Orem bars at midnight Saturdays. As a result of a decision this week by the Orem City Council, bars can now stay open until 1 a.m.
Carl Watkins, owner of Watties, argued last week that while Orem bars must close at midnight Saturday, Provo bars can stay open until 1 a.m. Sunday. He said this discrepancy made Orem bars less competitive and has cost him customers. The council postponed the discussion for a week while officials checked local ordinances. This week, in a 4-1 vote, the council approved the amendment allowing liquor license holders to keep their establishments open until 1 a.m. Sundays.
The one "no" vote was cast by Councilwoman Lucile Steele, who said Orem was a family oriented city and she didn't want that image to change.
