One boy was fatally injured and another was critically hurt when they were hit by a car while in a crosswalk at 11625 S. on 1300 East at about 7:45 a.m. Thursday.
The youths, ages 12 and 13, were on their way to Indian Hills Middle School when they were hit by a southbound vehicle driven by a 29-year-old Sandy man, according to Sandy police Sgt. Terry Pepper. Both boys were taken to Alta View Hospital, where the 12-year-old was flown by helicopter to Primary Children's Medical Center, Pepper said. Primary reported later that a patient flown in that morning had been pronounced dead.
The students' names had not yet been released and the cause of the accident was still under investigation at noon Thursday.
Pepper said a number of other students witnessed the accident, prompting Jordan School District officials to send the district's crisis team to the school to help deal with the trauma.
Residents of the neighborhoods near the school are also upset because there are no flashing lights warning of the school crossing on 1300 East, Pepper said.
