Spiders are not insects, and snakes are not slimy. Big "black cats," like jaguars and leopards, can't purr like ordinary house cats. Hogle Zoo's bats drink fruit nectar, not blood.

Children who visit Hogle Zoo between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, will learn interesting facts about the zoo's "Halloween animals."Volunteers, stationed around the zoo, will make brief presentations on spiders, snakes, owls, bats and black cats.

The first 500 costumed children will be given free trick-or-treat bags and will be encouraged to visit areas of the zoo for surprises, including a zoo pin-on, a toy compass, magnifying glass and candy.
