A Tooele County woman has pleaded guilty to a felony charge of misusing public funds while serving as a deputy county assessor.

Margaret L. Fonger, 21, Tooele, pleaded guilty Monday to the third-degree felony count in a plea bargain with the county prosecutor. A second count of felony theft of funds over $1,000 was dismissed.Third District Judge Frank G. Noel set sentencing for Nov. 26. Fonger faces a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Earlier, County Attorney Ron Elton said more than $10,000 had been diverted from public funds. As deputy county assessor, Fonger was responsible for depositing all daily receipts from the office.

The charges said the thefts occurred between June 26 and Aug. 24.
