A jury awarded $264,130 to a magician who lost his right leg when he fired a .357-caliber Magnum into a refrigerator full of dynamite.
The state district court jury Thursday found Johann Ulrich Hansler suffered $433,000 in damages in the 1983 accident south of Santa Fe. But they found Hansler 13 percent responsible and defendants Marie Allen and Synopco Corp. 61 percent responsible under New Mexico's comparative negligence procedure.Hansler, who now lives in Los Angeles, and Chedley Saheb-Ettaba, his former partner, had gone to the ranch at the invitation of John and Marie Allen during a U.S. tour that was to include appearances on "Saturday Night Live" and "The Tonight Show," Saheb-Ettabe testified.
On Nov. 4, 1983, Hansler testified that he was shooting at targets on the ranch when he fired the handgun at what he thought was an abandoned refrigerator. The dynamite stored inside exploded. Hansler's right leg was amputated above the knee.
