Tommie G. Matthews of Fruit Heights, a teacher at Salt Lake Community College for the past 20 years, has been honored by the U.S. Department of Labor with its Western States Regional Literacy Award for his part-time teaching efforts at the Davis Applied Technology Center, Kaysville.

Colorado Gov. Roy Romer presented Matthews the award at a recent Department of Labor regional conference in Denver.An instructor of mathematics and motivational psychology since 1961, Matthews has taught at several secondary schools in Utah and Arizona and at a post-secondary school in Samoa. He has taught math and motivational skills at DATC in the afternoons and evenings since 1985.
