The KGB and Interior Ministry on Monday announced a crackdown on black marketeers and lawmakers voted for a new law against "speculation," stepping up an official Soviet assault on the shadow economy.

The actions follow two presidential decrees aimed at breaking the black market's hold on many state supplies and a reform plan designed to transform the centrally planned economy into a partial market system."For the transition, we want to try to put more order in our economy," KGB chief Vladimir Kryuchkov said.
