Striking Oregon woodworkers at Willamette Industries Inc. approved a new contract Thursday in the first major settlement in a 2-month-old timber strike that had idled about 8,500 workers in five states.

The four-year contract affects workers at 13 Willamette plants in Oregon, according to company spokeswoman Cathy Baldwin. Baldwin and Witt said the settlement includes a $1,400 bonus the first year, a 3 percent increase the second year and 4 percent increases each of the last two years.
