Two boys were referred to Juvenile Court on Thursday after Salt Lake County deputy sheriffs caught the 13-year-olds shooting at cans with .22-caliber rifles near two schools.

The boys were shooting the rifles approximately 100 yards from Thomas Jefferson Junior High School, 5850 S. 5600 West, where both are students.According to deputies' reports, the boys were shooting at the cans at 8:30 a.m., the time students are on their way to school. The cans were sitting on a low dirt hill between the junior high and Beehive Elementary School.

The boys had 1,100 rounds of ammunition for the .22 rifles, which have a range of one mile, deputies said.
