Mary Elizabeth Briggs, a veteran elementary teacher who is currently working as a teacher specialist, has been named Jordan School District's Teacher of the Year for 1990-91.

She will represent the district in the national Teacher of the Year recognition program sponsored by the Council of Chief State School Officers in partnership with Encyclopedia Britannica Inc.In 1981, after beginning her career as an educator in the California school system, she moved to Jordan District where she taught first and third grades at Canyon View Elementary. She later taught third and sixth grades at Jordan Ridge Elementary before moving on to become a teacher specialist, where she writes curricula and helps other teachers improve their teaching skills.

Briggs has an associate's degree in dance from Sullins College in Bristol, Va., a bachelor of arts degree in history from the University of Utah, a Ryan multiple credential from California Polytechnic University in Pomona, Calif., and a master of science degree in gifted mathematics from the University of Utah.
