A man was arraigned in 4th Circuit Court Tuesday on an aggravated sexual assault charge stemming from a weekend assault of an Orem woman.
Joel Rodriguez, 27, of Mexico, who lives in Orem under a work permit, was charged in the beating and sexual assault of the 23-year-old woman in her mobile home early Sunday. The charge is a first-degree felony and punishable by life in prison and a $10,000 fine.Rodriguez, with the aid of an interpreter, appeared before 4th Circuit Judge Joseph I. Dimick to hear the charge and enter a plea. But Dimick said he was not sure whether Rodriguez understood the charge against him and requested he have immediate access to an attorney before entering a plea.
Dimick asked Utah County Deputy Attorney Jim Taylor to schedule a waiver hearing, a meeting between attorneys where plea arrangements are discussed, before scheduling a preliminary hearing.
Orem police arrested Rodriguez shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday at a mobile home court, 320 S. State, after receiving a call from a woman who said she had been beaten and raped.
Rodriguez is in the Utah County Jail on $50,000 bail.
