To the editor:
Recently, a nice thing happened in our community. An internationally known actor, Wilford Brimley, spent a lot of time, energy and money to raise money for a local cause. The concert and celebrity dinner-auction on behalf of the Guadalupe Early Learning Center were a class act in fund-raising, but to see the 65 children sing to the audience and in turn be serenaded by Brimley was a crowning touch. As the state specialist in reading/language arts education, I have been involved in the progress of the Guadalupe School for 15 years and have always been impressed with the educational services the staff delivers to these at-risk students. Both my husband and I have served on the board of directors at different times and know how each year the school struggles with finances.
I was so pleased at the wonderful response from the patrons who made the event such a success. My thanks to Brimley, his wife Lynne, Michael Clark, who managed to keep everything running very smoothly, and others. It was, in Wilford Brimley's words, "the right thing to do."
