Cool weather, with highs only in the upper 50s, prevailed Wednesday along most of the Wasatch Front, but it will be much warmer Thursday, the National Weather Service says.

It will be about 30 degrees Wednesday night and early Thursday, but the thermometer should rise into the upper 60s during the day Thursday, said William J. Alder, meteorologist in charge of the Salt Lake office. The weekend weather looks generally unsettled, especially in southern Utah.

It was 30 degrees early Wednesday at the Salt Lake Airport. That was the first freezing temperature at the airport this fall. The average date for a 32-degree reading at the airport is Oct. 15.

Lightning criss-crossed the sky and pea-sized hail fell in the Salt Lake Valley Tuesday night.
