Two Salt Lake City men were in jail Tuesday after one of them pointed a loaded rifle at officers responding to a fight call.

Salt Lake City Police Officer Kim Herburg said the incident occurred after officers responded to a fight at 1076 E. Second South.Herburg said when the officers knocked at the door, which was ajar a couple of inches, the men inside told them to "open the door." After knocking two more times, the officers saw a man pointing a rifle at the door.

The officers drew their weapons, Herburg said, and the man inside opened the door halfway and pointed the rifle at them.

One of the officers ordered the man to drop the rifle, and after two or three warnings, he complied.

"If the man would have held the rifle about a second longer, shots very well may have been fired," Herburg said. He said both men were intoxicated.
