It's the end of the 1990 prep football season as a number of 4A, 3A and 1A teams without postseason hopes play in regular-season finales Thursday. The same is true for a handful of 2A teams that will be eliminated by losses in first-round action of the 2A state playoffs this week.
While 18 4A and 3A teams have already assured themselves of first-round berths next week in the state playoffs, some 25 teams are still vying for the 14 spots still undecided. Here's how the eight 4A and 3A prep football leagues are shaping up going into Thursday's games, with a complete schedule listed in today's Scoreboard section on page D-4.
Teams having qualified for the playoffs have their current region records and seeding listed in parenthesis; region records are available for the teams that are still in the hunt for postseason opportunities.
Region 1 (4 4A berths)
Davis (5-0 - first), Roy (5-1 - second) and Clearfield (3-2 - third) are in. Bonneville (2-3) is even with Weber (2-3) for the fourth spot - it's cut- and-dried if one team wins and the other loses. If they both win, they tie and and force a preliminary playoff; if they both lose and Viewmont (1-4) upsets Davis, there's a three-way tie.
Region 2 (4 4A berths)
A win clinches first for Skyline (4-1) and gives Alta (4-2) second and Highland (3-2) no worse than a tie for third. Brighton (3-2) can also tie for third or finish fourth, while Olympus (2-3) needs a win to join Highland and Brighton in a three-way tie for third or tie Brighton for fourth.
A Brighton win over Skyline and a Highland victory results in a four-way tie for first, with the foursome finishing in the following fashion - Alta, Highland, Brighton, Skyline. A Brighton triumph and a Highland loss to East creates a tie for first between Skyline, Alta and Brighton (coin flip needed to determine seeding), with Highland fourth or tied for fourth by a victorious Olympus.
Region 3 (5 4A berths)
One winning team can assure the order of the top four seeds - West Jordan (5-1) first, Cyprus (5-1) second, Taylorsville (4-2) third and Granger (4-2) (4-2) fourth - if West Jordan beats Cyprus. And no matter the WJ-Granger outcome, a win by Bingham (3-3) gives the Miners fifth, while a triumph by Hillcrest over Cyprus allows the Huskies to tie for the final spot.
The different combinations outcomes from the WJ-Granger, Taylorsville- Hunter and Cyprus-Hillcrest games can shuffle the top four in all sorts of ways. Possible finishes for the foursome - West Jordan (first, 3-way tie for first, 3-way tie for second, or third), Cyprus (first, 3-way tie for first, or second), Granger (3-way tie for first, second, three-way tie for second, fourth) and Taylorsville (three-way tie for second, third, fourth).
Region 4 (3 4A berths)
Provo (3-1) can finish no worse than third, but a win guarantees the Bulldogs first. Orem (3-1) has equal chances at the Nos. 1, 2 and 3 seeds, as well as facing a preliminary playoff should their be a four-way tie for first or a three-way tie for second. A win by Pleasant Grove (2-2) gives the Vikings second, while a triumph by Timpview (2-2) is good for second, third or a third-seed tie with Orem; losses by either or both PG and Timpview create possible two-, three- and four-way ties for third or postseason elimination.
American Fork (1-3) must win and hope for a 3-way or 4-way tie for third - the former created if PG loses and the latter if the PG defeat is coupled with an upset of Provo by Mountain View (1-3). The Bruins' only hope is that 4-way tie for fourth.
Region 5 (5 3A berths)
Bear River (5-0 - first) and Mountain Crest (4-1 - second) are certainties.
A victory by Sky View (3-2) gives the Bobcats third, while a loss puts SV at either third, fourth or in a three-way tie for third.
The winner between Logan (2-3) and Box Elder (2-3) avoids a fifth-place tie with Ben Lomond (2-3), if the Scots fall to MC. A BL victory means the Logan- Box Elder loser is eliminated.
Region 6 (4 3A berths)
Bountiful (6-0 - first) and Jordan (5-1 - second) are set, while West (4-2) can take third by beating Murray (3-3). However, a Murray win gives the Spartans third. Woods Cross (3-3) must beat Bountiful to keep postseason hopes alive - the Wildcats take fourth outright if West beats Murray; they tie West for fourth with a Murray victory. And the only chance for Tooele (2-4) is a three-way tie for fourth, but the Buffaloes must win as well as West and Woods Cross.
Region 7 (3 3A berths)
Lehi (4-0 - first) clinched the league title well before this week's game against Carbon (2-2), but the game to watch is Emery County (3-1) playing at Wasatch (2-2). If the host Wasps lose, then Emery is second and Carbon third.
If Lehi and Wasatch win, then Wasatch is second and Emery third. And if both Carbon and Wasatch triumph - a three-way tie for second between Emery, Carbon and Wasatch, requiring a preliminary playoff.
Region 8 (4 3A berths)
Springville (4-0 - first) and Dixie (3-1 - second) are in. The winner of the game between Pine View (2-2) and Spanish Fork (2-2) is third and the loser fourth, unless Cedar City (1-3) beats Dixie and ties for the No. 4 spot.
