It's essentially a two-region race this week in the 4A and 3A girls prep soccer state playoffs, with two leagues dominating the pairings in each of the two classifications.
Prep girlssoccer Brighton and Ben Lomond, the 4A and 3A titlists in last year's inaugural UHSAA-sanctioned competition of girls soccer, are still in contention to successfully defend their championships.
Quarterfinal play continues Wednesday at school sites in both the 4A and 3A playoffs, with Friday's semifinals and Saturday's finals moving to Derks Field.
In Monday's inter-region playoffs, the four teams from Region 1 and the four teams from Region 2 eliminated their counterparts from Regions 3 and 4, making the 4A tournament now a Region 1-Region 2 affair.
Wednesday's quarterfinals, which will be played at school sites, has Viewmont at Skyline, Alta at Layton, Roy at Brighton, and Cottonwood at Weber.
In Friday's semifinals at Derks Field, the Skyline-Viewmont winner meets the Alta-Layton victor at 3:30 p.m., while the winners of the Roy-Brighton and Cottonwood-Weber games square off at 5:15 p.m. Saturday's 4A final is at 2 p.m. at Derks.
Only 15 of the state's 27 3A schools participate in girls soccer competition - all of the Region 5 schools from northern Utah, all but Tooele from central Utah's Region 6, and Lehi - the sole representative from Regions 7 and 8.
Jordan, the fourth-place seed from Region 6, defeated Lehi in a preliminary playoff Monday. Wednesday's quarterfinal pairings had a distinct Region 5 versus Region 6 flavor - Logan at Woods Cross, Bountiful at Ogden, Sky View at Judge, and Jordan at Ben Lomond.
Like the 4A tournament, Friday's 3A semifinals and Saturday's 3A finals switch to Derks Field. The Woods Cross-Logan winner meets the Ogden-Bountiful winner at noon Friday in the first 3A semifinal, while the winners of the Judge-Sky View and Ben Lomond-Jordan contests pair up in the 1:45 p.m. semifinal.
Saturday's 3A championship is scheduled for noon.
