Hundreds of Zulu coal miners attacked Xhosa workers at a coal mine residential compound in Natal province overnight, killing 10 and wounding 52 others, police and mine officials said Tuesday.

Brig. Fritz Brand, regional chief of operations, said the clash erupted around 10:30 p.m. Monday at the black worker dwellings at the Hlobane colliery, about 16 miles outside the northern Natal province town of Vryheid.Fighting engulfed several residential buildings and spilled into the bush outside. All casualties appeared to have been Xhosas, Brand said.
