Running against some of the top women harriers in the nation, BYU newcomer Dorota Buczkwoska, Lublin, Poland, blazed to a fourth-place finish at the Pre-NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday morning to lead the Cougar team to second place in the 16-team field.
Buczkowska was clocked at 17:08 on the 5,000-meter route staked out on the Pine Lakes Golf Course, a hilly layout which BYU coach Patrick Shaned described as "difficult."Here's how the other runners on the Cougars' 5th-ranked squad fared: Nicole Birk 17:16, 7th; Tonya Todd 17:33, 15th; Leanne Whitesides 17:47; 23rd; Angela Lee 18:01, 33rd; Tara Laws 18:22, 45th; Sondra Gibb 18:25, 49th; and Margi Weber 18:33, 57th.
Tennessee veteran Patty Wiegand won the individual chase in 16:58.
NCAA defending champion Villanova won the team title with 46 points, followed by BYU 77, Tennessee 120, Clemson 136, Iowa 145, Northern Arizona 154, Auburn and Penn State (tie) 177, Arizona 183, Alabama 224.
