An 18-year-old man was charged Tuesday with aggravated assault for allegedly ordering his pit bull to attack a Salt Lake police officer.
Troy Randy Montoya, 225 S. 15th West, was charged Tuesday in 3rd Circuit Court with aggravated assault, a third-degree felony, and a misdemeanor count of assault on a peace officer.Montoya's brother, Franklin Jeff Montoya, 27, 1794 W. Fourth North, was charged Tuesday with assault on a peace officer.
Both brothers were released on bail.
According to police reports, Troy ordered the pit bull to attack officer Dave Hendricks as the officer went around the house and climbed over a back fence while investigating a report of gunshots.
The report said Troy yelled at his pit bull, "There he is, go get him," and pointed at Hendricks.
Hendricks pulled out his service revolver and shot the dog twice in the head as it charged him, killing the animal.
Troy and Frank began to argue with Hendricks and Officer Robert Hawke and began to assault the officers. Both officers were hit in the face several times before the brothers were subdued and handcuffed.
