A mental competency evaluation has been ordered for a Logan man charged in 2nd District Court with sexual abuse of a child, a second-degree felony. David J. Gilmore, 57, was arraigned on the charge this week.

Defense attorney Stephen Oda asked for an evaluation to determine if Gilmore is competent to stand trial or assist in his defense.A social worker who appeared in court with Gilmore told Judge Rodney S. Page the man is mentally retarded. According to court records, Gilmore works in a sheltered workshop in Cache Valley for most of the year, working for the Forest Service in Davis County during the summer.

The sexual abuse incident reportedly occurred in Kaysville in April of this year, according to court records.

Page agreed to the defense attorney's request, ordering a mental evaluation be done on Gilmore by Bear River Mental Health and set a hearing for Nov. 13.
