Most Monroe residents won't have to haul their own garbage any more. The City Council awarded a contract for garbage pickup to White Sanitation.

Residents have found it costly to haul their own garbage to a county landfill, some 20 miles distant, since Sevier County commissioners removed Dumpsters from sites previously used by residents. Now citizens will pay $6 per month per household for pickup service.The contract also provides for pickup of refuse twice each year during citywide cleanup programs and weekly pickup at the city's yard and park.

White Sanitation will provide households with 100-gallon capacity containers with wheels for convenience in moving garbage to pickup areas in front of the homes. The firm will gather unlimited amounts of garbage, grass, shrubs, materials from remodeling projects, old appliances and tree limbs. Limbs must be bundled and cut in lengths of 6 feet or less.

The council reported that a bid for a lesser amount of $4.70 was submitted by Ivan Munk of Centerfield. The pickup was limited only to garbage and would have required containers to accommodate automated collection.

The city has about 600 households that will use the service, amounting to some $43,000 annually for the contractor. Citizens will be billed with water and power statements, said City Recorder Emilee Curtis.

The city won't charge an administration fee for the service but will require $3 per month from each household to pay for the landfill operation. That money will go directly to Sevier County, Curtis said.
