The Utah Department of Transportation has paid $12,500 to settle a civil environmental citation for its dumping waste Syn-crete along I-15 in Salt Lake County.
Salt Lake County Attorney David E. Yocom announced that a settlement has been reached between UDOT and the Utah Bureau of Water Pollution Control regarding a citation against UDOT over improper disposal of syn-crete in the county. The notice of violation was issued against UDOT for dumping a toxic slurry of ground Syn-crete road surface and water into county storm drains without a permit in April. UDOT was removing Syn-crete because the surface started breaking up soon after it was applied last summer.
Yocom said $5,000 was paid to the Salt Lake City-County Health Department for expenses in investigating UDOT's violation. The rest, $7,500, went to Murray City to improve the Jordan River Parkway.
"UDOT will take all actions necessary in the future to prevent the unauthorized discharge of all wastewaters generated by their operations," the agreement says.
