Opposition leader Kim Dae-jung was hospitalized Monday, the eighth day of a hunger strike he launched to express outrage at a spy scandal and demand speedy democratic reforms.

A weak and haggard-looking Kim was moved by ambulance to Yonsei University Hospital in western Seoul late in the day and shortly after all 69 members of his party decided to join their leader's hunger strike.The 66-year-old Kim, a two-time presidential candidate, had lost about 13 pounds and his condition was rapidly deteriorating, aides said. He had remained in his office, drinking only water since Oct. 8.
