The League of Women Voters of Utah is sponsoring a debate Tuesday on whether the sales tax on food should be removed, a question that will appear on the November ballot as Initiative A.

The public is invited to the league's general meeting, where the issue will be discussed. It starts 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday in the social hall of the Cathedral of the Madeleine, 331 E. South Temple. Rod Decker, a former Deseret News staff writer who is now a reporter for KUTV television (Channel 2), will moderate.Speaking in favor of Initiative A will be Pat Shea, Democratic national committeeman for Utah. Michael Leavitt, a member of the State Board of Regents who opposes the tax removal because of the effect that cutting the tax could have on higher education, will speak against the initiative.
